I decided to splurge and buy this CD for our road trip to Italy this week. It was fun and I was in the mood to give the girls a little MJ history, you know, share this nostalgia with my kids. Two things happened that were a little fun and surprising. First, I remembered the words to most of the songs and some of them I haven't heard in what, 15-20 years. I loved seeing the wonder in my kids eyes as I sung these groovy songs to them. Not to mention the fact that I absolutely floored Bailey when I moonwalked for her while watching Thriller. Yep, I can do that and I loved seeing the look of, "My mom really is cool". The second surprising thing that happened on our road trip was how much my girls really enjoyed this music. It was new to them, they have no idea about MJ and every song made them tap their feet and desperately want to sing along.
Now, I have feelings over the amount of press that his passing has attracted. Yes, it was tragic, but really, all facts point out that he brought it on himself. AND here is my point, why is this getting more coverage than the deaths of our soldiers that are happening daily? Was MJ a hero? a role model? defending our freedoms? brave? Absolutely not more than about a million other people out there. All he was, was an entertainer, and in the grand scheme of things, that really isn't the type of person that moves mountains and makes big positive change. Maybe we needed someone like this to distract us from reality at times and put a smile on our faces. He did do that . . . well at least he did in the 80's.
I think McKenna sums up MJ perfectly when she describes him as "the guy that lights things up when he walks (remember Billie Jean?)" or "the guy that dances with the monsters", either description fits right?
What are our favs? Mark=I want you back. Leslie = The way you make me feel. Bailey = Black or White. McKenna = Rockin Robin or ABC.
McKenna was looking at the CD cover and there is a picture of MJ when he was 5 years old. She was mesmerized by it while listening to "I want you back". So here is the conversation:
McKenna, "So he was my age when he sang this song?"
Mom, "Yup"
McKenna, "Did his mommy let him do that?"
Mom, "yup"
McKenna, "Mom, you HAVE to let ME do that!"
Mom, "I do let you do that"
McKenna, "But I want to do that on a stage"
Folks, I am going to be a roadie for the rest of my life.

MJ was a genious when it came to his music and his showmanship.. But I feel bad for the person he became in all that fame and fortune. I LOVE all the Jackson 5 songs. And pretty much most of the stuff up to and including the 80's. Tell Bailey, that I LOVE Rockin' Robin too! I can not let that one go by without singing along with it! I also really like "Ben", and "Man in the Mirror" and "We are the World"... I could go on and on...
Good luck with McKenna.. Maybe you could form a family band! You need to brush up on your keyboarding, right?
I was a fan too- no posters- that was Michelle- but I have the 4 cd set from years ago- should pull them out and introduce my kids- they all see the creepy guy he turned into-
my favs-- You are not alone for sure- man in the mirror- thriller- GREAT video- still remember all the CRAZE when it came out when I was in 6th grade-- and I can't think of the name but the one about kids that they sang at the end of the furneral-- yes I watched it- although the recorded version that I could fast forward through
I am glad you put one of his older pictures--before he turned weird. His music is still great--he couldn't have made it to the top if it wasn't. I want to see the moon walk someday! You ARE cool!
So sad that people like MJ and Elvis have to have such sad and lonley lives that they have to die like they did! Look at the difference between Elvis then and now. How sad... a life full of leeches and insecurity for both!
No favorite MJ songs, but about Elvis...........I know, I know another time.
I also want to see the moon walk and am wondering why you were so surprised that he liked his music. Anyone with a pulse has got to tap their foot when MJ is on-it's great! Despite his great music I totally agree about the too much press -and well I do have to admit I saw some of his memorial service and quite frankly is was nausiating. So glad you had great tunes for your long road trip. Can't wait to hear about all the wonderful food, and places you were able to enjoy in beautiful Italia!
We are going on our road trip soon, and we will definitely be listening to a little MJ. The girls already love several of his songs, especially PYT. I hope your trip goes smoothly. Are you going in your new cute car?
So many faves Billy Jean is the one that comes to mind though
